This database is about observations of porpoises around Sweden.

Over 645 sightings of cetacean groups (of one and more individuals) have been recorded in the Black Sea, Azov Sea and Kerch Strait during the period from 1993 to 2010 inclusive.

A total of 648 incidental catches of Black Sea cetaceans in fishing gear have been recorded in the northern Black Sea off the coasts of Crimea between 1997 and 2009.

CIBRA Center for Bioacoustics, Univ. of Pavia, organizes research cruises in the Med sea since 1994. Visual and acoustic contacts (1994 - 2001) are available on OBIS-SEAMAP, while acoustic recordings are stored in our Sound library and available upon request.

This dataset represents a subset of the INBO-database on the distribution of seabirds and marine mammals starting from 1992 in north-west European marine areas with a focus on Belgian marine waters.

The dataset was colected by whale watching companies in the Azores between 2009 and 2020 as a contribution to the long term monitoring of cetaceans. It contains the identification of the species observed, the geographic position of the observation, the life stages and its respective abundance and behavior, as well as related environmental variables (sea state, visibility).

As part of the Belgian LifeWatch observatory, a permanent Cetacean passive acoustic network is established in the Belgian Part of the North Sea. The sensor network uses C-PODs (Chelonia Limited) to register the presence of harbour porpoise (<i>Phocoena phocoena</i>) in the neighbourhood. Click trains of harbour porpoises are detected and classified using the CPOD software and high and moderate quality click trains are selected. The dataset is published yearly aggregated per hour. In related datasets, described below, aggregated data per minute is available.

The dataset provided here consists of sighting data of marine mammals collected between January 2014 and December 2018, along the ferry route between Italy and Spain, within the Fixed Line Transect Mediterranean monitoring Network (FLT Med Net), a multidisciplinary monitoring project coordinated by ISPRA since 2007. The programme uses ferry boats as observation platforms to undertake surveys of marine macro-fauna and main threats (maritime traffic and floating marine litter), and involves several International partners that share common protocols for data collection across different routes in the Mediterranean Sea. This datasets includes 1432 georeferenced sightings of 8 cetacean species, together with effort data covered in good weather conditions (Beaufort <4), for a total of approximately 71.300 km, over 291 surveyed transects.

The national monitoring program was initiated by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and is now financed by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. The monitoring is performed by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Data is stored in the database SHARK, hosted and maintained by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. Monitoring of seals is performed by counting seals from land, ship or airplane.
